Yoga Therapy

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient Bharat (India) and aim to control mind and keep body healthy. Origin of Yoga is in Rugved. Ayurved is part of Rugved. There is a wide variety of schools of yoga. Both traditional and modern yoga is practiced worldwide.
Rushi Patanjali devided yoga in 8 parts in Yoga Sutras 2.29:

1. Yama (The five abstentions): Ahinvsa (Non-harming other living beings) Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (fidelity to one’s partner) and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness especially for wealth).
2. Niyama (The five “observances”): Shauch (purity, clearness of mind, speech and body) Santosha (contentment, acceptance of others and of one’s circumstances) Tap (perseverance, austerity) Swadhyay (self-study), and Ishvara-Pranidhan (contemplation of God/Supreme Being/True Self).
3. Asana: Literally means “seat”, and in Patanjali’s Sutras refers to the seated position used for yoga.
4. Pranayama (“Breathing exercises”): Prana= breath, ayama = stretch, extend, restrain, stop.
5. Pratyahara (“Abstraction”): Withdrawal of the sense organs from external objects.
6. Dharana (“Concentration”): Fixing the attention on a single object.
7. Dhyana (“Meditation”): Intense contemplation of the nature of the object of meditation.
8. Samadhi (“Liberation”): merging consciousness with higher consciousness.
